Recitation of my favorite poem

哀江南赋庾信
00:00 / 16:20
"The Lament for the South"
Yu Hsin
Recited by Xiao Chang
Translation(Abridged):

1 In the year wu-ch 'en,
2 The month when the Dipper points
northwest,
3 A great thief stole the state;
4 The defenders of Chin-ling
scattered like tiles.
I then
5 Hid myself in Huang-ku, where
all were in mud and fire;
6 And went on a mission through
Hua-yang, from which there
was no return.
7 The restoration faltered,
8 And failed in chia-hsu.
9 I mourned three days in the city
hostel,
10 Was imprisoned three years in
a detached lodging.
11 The stars are completing their
cycles,
12 But the course of events moves
on.
13 Like Fu Hsieh, I can only lament
my fate, I cannot save myself,
14 Like Yuan An, thinking of the
royal house, I spontaneously
shed tears.
Already before me
15 The career of Huan T'an
16 The life of Tu Yii
17 Both were recounted
18 Both were retold.

In December, 548, the rebel
Hou Ching attacked the Liang
capital at Chien-k'ang, which
fell to him.

Yii Hsin fled to the court of
Hsiao Yi in Chiang-ling; he was
sent from there to the Western
Wei, which detained him and
destroyed Hsiao Yi.

Yu, the subject of a fallen dynasty,

was to spend the rest of his life
in the North.
Now, at the end of the year, the
heavens are demonstrating their
cyclical nature, but there is no
hope either for a restoration of
the Liang or for his own return
home.

Grief, both for his misfortunes
and for the fall of the Liang,
forces him to express himself in
writing.
There are respectable precedents
for autobiographies

Pulse of the City

Cityscape sound recordings in Jinan

Taxi
City hums at night, a restless tune,
Tires on wet streets, a cab's faint croon,
Echoes fade as silence fills the room.

00:00 / 05:06

Supermarket

Fluorescent hum, shelves stacked in perfect rows,
Plastic bags crackle, caught in the air's flow,
Moments blur in checkout lines, nowhere to go.

00:00 / 01:17

Park

Wind whispers through trees, swings creak slow,
Footsteps crunch on gravel paths below,
Laughter rises, then drifts where shadows grow.

00:00 / 03:53

The Elderly

Slow hands glide through air, a quiet grace,
Voices rise in song, filling the open space,
Rhythms of life in each measured pace.

00:00 / 07:47

Train Station

Engines rumble, whispers fill the air,
Suitcases roll, lives passing everywhere,
A train departs, and silence lingers there.
